Peanut Butter Girl Scout Cookies
Are Safe (and Delicious) to Eat
JUPITER, FL, January 22, 2009— Girl Scout Cookie lovers can enjoy their favorite annual treat without worrying about the safety of the two varieties that contain peanut butter. Peanut butter used in the Tagalongs and Do-Si-Dos does NOT come from Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the only peanut butter manufacturer linked by the FDA to the salmonella contamination.
The FDA’s suggestion that consumers avoid all peanut butter products for the time being reflects the fact that many consumers do not know the source of the peanut butter in the products they consume. However, Little Brownie Bakers, which bakes both the Tagalongs and Do-Si-Dos, has assured the volunteers, parents, girls and customers of the Girl Scout Councils that work with them that the peanut butter in their cookies is not linked to the salmonella contamination.
If consumers have concerns, they are encouraged to contact Lisa Johnson, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida at 561-427-0175 or via email ljohnson@gssef.org: ljohnson@gssef.org .Consumers can read official statements from Little Brownie Bakers and Girl Scouts of the USA on the Council website http:// www.gssef.org.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is America’s leading business and economic literacy program for girls. And during the 2009 sale, which runs January 22 through February 10, local Girl Scouts will put their sales and marketing skills into action as they strive to reach an unprecedented goal: Sell 1.8 million boxes of cookies.
