17 Girl Scouts From Southeast Florida Earn Gold Award
Gold Award is Girl Scouts’ Highest Honor
Jupiter, FL, June 10, 2010 – Seventeen Girl Scouts from southeast Florida were recently honored with the Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor. Only 1% of Girl Scouts worldwide achieve this prestigious accomplishment each year. The Gold Award can be earned by a Girl Scout ages 14-18.
To become a candidate for the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must complete a seven-step leadership project that is approved by a Gold Award committee, meets an expressed need in their community and encompasses organizational, leadership and networking skills. At a ceremony on April 30, 2010, each of the 17 Girl Scouts presented their individual Gold Award projects, a culmination of work that represents over 65 hours of planning, implementation and evaluation.
“These Gold Award projects signify more than a just good service project. They showcase the commitment and skill set each girl possess that forms the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship,” commented Denise Valz, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida. “These projects might not always make headlines, but they make a difference and leave a legacy that will impact their community for years to come.”
The projects were varied, representing the passion each of the girls has for a specific issue or area of need in their community. Some of the projects included monthly birthday parties at a homeless shelter, refurbishing an eagle habitat, planning a Recycle Day fair, making handmade blankets for veterans, creating a reading area at a local school and planting trees at a local park while teaching kids about their importance to the environment.
“We are proud of what each of these girls have achieved,” Valz said. “This is just one example of how Girl Scouts and the programs we offer to girls in our community help build and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.”
The 2010 Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are Natalie A., Shelby B., Amber B., Rachael C., Sarah C., Danielle G., Lindsey G., Debi G. Cassie H., Janet H., Ashley M., Jordan N., Sarah R., Rachel R., Kara R., Jennifer T. and Angelica S..
