September 16, 2009— Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida has been recognized for the “Largest Gathering of Soft Toys” in the “Guinness World Records 2010—Book of the Decade”. Girl Scouts organized a record breaking building and gathering of 5,884 stuffed animals at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, FL on September 6, 2008 as part of a Unity Celebration to mark the merger of two local Girl Scout Councils. Thousands of local Girl Scouts took part in the event, which was sponsored by Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop, and most of the stuffed animals were donated to local organizations who work with children in crisis. The event was a shining example of girls working together to make the world a better place.

“We are very excited about being in the Guinness Book of World Records,” commented CEO Denise Valz. “We are about to celebrate our year anniversary of being one council with more than 50 staff and nearly 7,000 volunteers serving 19,000 girls in six counties. We are proud of our strong leadership, wonderful community support, and an unwavering commitment to providing leadership development programs for girls.”

The merger of these two councils was part of a Girl Scouts historic transformation to modernize the iconic organization and focus on leadership development in the 21st century. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida serves more than 19,000 girls in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties

The Girl Scout record can be found on page 158 of the book, along with a photo of three local Girl Scouts and the huge pile of toys.
