gs week

This year, from March 9 through 15, Girl Scouts celebrate Girl Scout Week—a commemoration of the organization’s beginning 102 years ago. Girl Scout Week is celebrated each March, starting with Girl Scout Sunday and ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on Saturday, and it always includes the Girl Scout Birthday, March 12.

The Girl Scout Birthday on March 12 commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. With now 3.2 million members, this year, 2014, represents our 102nd birthday!  There are many ways to celebrate the Girl Scout birthday.  How is your troop marking Girl Scout Week and celebrating Girl Scouts Birthday? Please send photos and a brief description of the activity to

Whatever you do … make sure to have a Happy Girl Scout Birthday!

Girl Scouts of USA is partnering with LeanIn.Org  for a public service campaign, Ban Bossy, that helps girls flex their leadership muscles (and have fun doing it)—something Girl Scouts has been doing for more than a century. The goal of this public service campaign is to not only ban the word bossy and its negative connotations which can hold girls back from speaking up but to encourage leadership in girls.

As part of the Ban Bossy launch this week, Parade Magazine features a cover story and interview with Condoleezza Rice, Sheryl Sandberg and Girl Scouts CEO Anna Maria Chávez. To learn how this powerful trio aims to change the conversation about girls and leadership, click here.

More information about Ban Bossy including troop leader, girl and family resources can be found at
