Jupiter, FL May 2, 2013 – Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida recently held their Annual Recognition Ceremony.  The event was a chance to honor the hard work and dedication of the more than 6,000 volunteers that help serve, lead and mentor the 15,000 Girl Scouts throughout the Council.

Thirty seven award recipients were recognized at the event in five different categories including the Thanks Badge II, Thanks Badge, Honor Pin, Appreciation Pin and the Family Award.

Carolyn Torres from Pembroke Pines was the recipient of the Thanks Badge II.  This national recognition is the highest award given to an active, registered adult member.  Nominated by her peers, Torres has already received the Thanks Badge and continues to offer the same level of service; going significantly above and beyond the call of duty when providing service to girls, other volunteers and the Council.

The service performed by candidates of the Thanks Badge is truly outstanding and benefits the total Council and the entire Girl Scouts organization. Their actions and efforts demonstrate going significantly above and beyond the call of duty. The Thanks Badge has been a national recognition since 1913. This year’s two Thanks Badge recipients are Penne Handler Ferrigno and Nazly Nardi-Espino, both from Hollywood.

The purpose of the Honor Pin is to acknowledge service performed by a volunteer that is outstanding, above and beyond the expectations of the position held, and is delivered to two or more Service Units and contributes to the Council’s goals and objectives.  This year the Honor Pin recipients were Lindsey Brown, Joan Campbell, Ada Harris, Carol Johnson and Kelly Parsons.

To be eligible for the Appreciation Pin, a volunteer must provide outstanding service to at least one Service Unit, go above and beyond the expectations of their volunteer position and contribute to the Council’s goals and objectives. The Appreciation Pin recipients are Cary Alfonso, Sandi Britton-Kluttz, Cathy Castaldo, Lidia Castillo, Elissa Eiseman, Tracey Eller, Kathy Embrey, Debra Geiger, Jeri Gumbinner, Debbie Hanley, Gretchen Hoover, Alicia Howard, Sylvia Hughes, Linda Ibanez-Johnson, Christina MacMullen, Mikey Marini, Dollie Mayo, Johnna Miller, Christina Morla, Brooke Radcliffe, Jennifer Santos, Kim Schnitzius, Krissy Sills, Lisa Steinberger, Eileen Wetzel, Carla Wooten and Emily Zarzycki.

Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida also honored two families who went “above and beyond” with their time and dedication to the Council this year. Family Awards are given to the entire family who supports the Girl Scout Movement, and only can be awarded one time. The Family Award was presented to the Horvath Family from Coral Springs and the Howard Family from Jupiter.

In addition to these awards, Girl Scouts recognized 69 local companies and organizations with the Community Award and 52 individuals with the Volunteer of Excellence Award.

With more than 12,000 cupcakes purchased by South Florida dessert lovers, Duffy’s presented Girl Scouts with a check for $6000.  “We’re thrilled that our customers love our special dessert and allow us the opportunity to continue to support an organization like Girl Scouts,” said Paul Emmett, President of Duffy’s Sports Grill.  “Our successful partnership allows Girl Scouts to continue to provide excellent programming and skill building opportunities for girls in our community.”

This is the third year in a row GSSEF has teamed up with Duffy’s, raising a total of $18,500 with their special Samoa Cookie Cupcake dessert. The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program teaches girls about goal setting, money management, marketing and customer service, and gives them valuable business and entrepreneurial skills that prepare them to be leaders now and in the future.
