GSSEF 2010 – 2011 Patch Programs and Membership Program Patches

These are the “only” currently available GSSEF Council Patch Programs during the 2010 – 2011 Girl Scout year.

Butterflies Council’s Own Try It / Badge (B, J)


Developed by Troop 331 of Port St Lucie, this project will interest the littlest scientist! Lots of real life ‘quiet’ action Brownies will really enjoy – and they love the colorful award too!

Camp Welaka – Then and Now Patch (All Grade Levels)

The purpose of this Patch Program is to educate Girl Scouts about the history of Camp Welaka and to encourage exploration of the camp. After fulfilling the requirements (the * is required) the Camp Welaka Then and Now Patch may be purchased at either Council Shoppe (OPSC or JSC). Cooking Fun Council’s Own Badge (J)

More and more girls are becoming really great cooks! With this badge, developed by Boynton Beach Troop 299, girls will explore different kinds of cookware, careers in the field (so popular right now) as well as discover everything from how to “julienne”, to how a commercial kitchen operates.

Discover the World Patch (C,S A)

Figuring out how to create a travel budget; learning how to say hello and goodbye in different languages; even taking part in local volunteer projects are all possible ways to complete the patch. Suggested activities can be done at a local hostel (Orlando), through the internet, or as a part of a hostelling adventure to a new place! Designed by girls for girls, the patch was created by a troop from Maine who went on an adventure to the Boston American Youth Hostel.

Doll Collector Patch Program (All Grade Levels)

Dolls have been a part of humankind since prehistoric times. Learn about the history of dolls, exploring the past and the present. Enjoy the fascination with dolls that has touched many generations. Patches are available in the Council Shoppes.

Fashion Council’s Own Badge (J)

Developed by two fashion minded Girl Scouts from Wellington who wanted to know more about their favorite subject than was in the books. Girls will explore many aspects of fashion from history to design – even modeling. It’s pure fun!

Girl Scouts Love Sea Turtles (All Grade Levels)

Some of the most important endangered and threatened Sea Turtle nesting beaches in the world are right here in our council area. Some of the most important research is being done here as well. Learn all about what‟s happening with Sea Turtles so you can make a difference. Our most popular council patch! Patches are available in the Council Shoppes

Go Red Patch Program (All Age Levels)

This Patch Program seeks to bring Girl Scouts and the women they love together to raise awareness of the danger of heart disease, and to help girls love their hearts, make healthier choices, and empower women they love to do the same. Upon completion of program, Girl Scouts may purchase patches for $2 each. Patch order form included with requirements.

Habitat for Humanity Patch Program (All Grade Levels)

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth, and to make simple, decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity is active in communities all around the world. Find out what Habitat is doing in your community and get involved. Patches are available in the Council Shoppes.

Hispanic American Culture Patch Program (B, J, C, S, A)

Hola amigas! Learn flamenco! Eat some Tacos! Make some maracas, learn the Promise and the Law in Spanish!! In October Girl Scouts all over the US celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month! GSSEF invites you to discover, connect and celebrate the Hispanic Culture through the different activities to earn the Council’s NEW Hispanic American Culture Patch! Disfrútenlo! Diviértanse !!

Izzy the Inchworm (All Grade Levels)

She‟s silly! She‟s cute! She has a great big smile and can wind herself all over a badge sash or vest! She‟s a great way of keeping track of all those community action / service hours girls put in each year. Patches are available in the Council Shoppes.

Leatherworks Council’s Own Junior Badge (J)

Written by the very talented and experienced leather crafter and volunteer, Mary Jo Mielke, earning this unique badge will engage girls in learning a lot about crafting with leather, a hobby of historic proportions in Girl Scouting.

MouthPower (D, B, J)

Created in partnership with the American Dental Association, www.MouthPower.org shares the power of a healthy smile through an educational web experience. Mouthie® guides participants through his interactive laboratory to activities that teach lessons about oral health, healthy eating, tobacco use prevention, and how a dental visit has changed. Visitors earn virtual teeth as they explore the site and can download a certificate. Girl Scouts may also purchase a MouthPower® patch ($3 each). Now in Spanish!

No Bones about It (All Grade Levels)

This truly unique patch program is brought to you in partnership with the Humane Society of Broward County. Program information is available directly from the Humane Society and patches are purchased there as well. Troop Leaders may contact the Humane Society of Broward County directly to schedule a program for your troop. Please contact the Education Department, 954.266.6848.

Passport to Adventure Patch Program (All Grade Levels)

Your new council has LOTS to offer. Explore the many rich treasures that are hidden throughout each county. This exciting Patch Program will allow you to visit and learn about twelve (12) historic sites in the Southeast Florida Council. Download a Passport for the members of your troop and get it signed or place something memorable about your trip in each box. Patches are available in the Council Shoppes.

Serve to Preserve Girl Scout Patch Program (All Grade Levels)

Governor Charlie Crist introduced the new “Serve to Preserve” Scout Award. “Through programs like Serve to Preserve Florida, we are linking two of Florida‟s greatest resources – our children and our environment,” said Governor Crist. “The award will give scouts the opportunity to develop a sense of stewardship for the environment and create an effective way for young people to share new ideas and approaches to protect natural Florida.” The program allows Girl Scout troops to earn an award insignia by completing educational activities about Florida‟s natural environment.

Snuggles and Cuddles (All Grade Levels)

Help your local animal shelter make life a bit better for the hundreds of unwanted dogs and cats they try to care for. Directions for making much needed “snuggles and cuddles” plus lots of other ideas. Includes resources for learning how this terrible and growing problem could actually be solved through education about pet care, spaying and neutering. Patches are available in the Council Shoppes.

Storm Ready Council’s Own Try It / Badge (B, J)

Developed by Jupiter Troop 488, this excellent and comprehensive program helps girls to be a viable part of important family natural disaster preparation. A must for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts in our council!

Trees for the 21st Century Patch Program (All Grade Levels)

Trees for the 21st Century is a unique educational and tree-planting program for children ages 6 to 18, involving science-based learning, tree-planting, and ongoing stewardship activities. Through the Trees for the 21st Century initiative, we aim to teach children about the value of the environment; expand the world inventory of trees to protect and improve natural resources; and to help children value long term stewardship of trees, Earth‟s “perfect organic machines.”

Water Drop (B, J, C, S, A)

Build an aquifer, take a “streamwalk”, or be a wetlands detective! These are some of the activities girls can try! This wonderful program with fascinating activities was developed by the Girl Scout Council of the Nation‟s Capital and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and comes to you complete with extensive program links.

Star Troop (All Grade Levels)
The Star Guide is a sort of “map” to a well rounded Girl Scout program year showing all the areas to discover and explore! It‟s a planning guide to assure everything‟s included; such as girl planning, camping, programs, service, cookies, sister troops, and sponsorship. Star Troop Patch
Make New Friends (All Grade Levels)
If a Girl Scout or adult volunteer recruits a new girl or adult, this special patch may be purchased for the recruiter and the recruitee. This patch is also available to anyone who registers a girl or adult who has a lapsed membership and returns to Girl Scouting.
Summer Funshine (All Grade Levels)
The sun shines brightest in June, July, and August! Troops who plan and implement three activities (one per month) earn this great patch. Contact your Membership Service Manager for more information.
